Millions of books have been digitized since 2000. When we want to discover them, though, researchers often have to choose between two often unsatisfactory choices: keyword search that dips into library at random, and historical classifications that carry the century-old priorities. Ben Schmidt (assistant professor of history, Northeastern University) will explore how new techniques in visualization and machine learning make it possible to better understand the elisions, biases, and priorities that shaped taxonomies of knowledge as the modern research library emerged. Podcasts are increasingly popular as assignments in a range of courses. Composing a stand-along podcast using audio editing software provides a range of opportunities for working with media and language. Less frequently assigned are live podcasts. Using a radio show format, participants can hold discussions and play media clips. At this workshop, Zachary Metzger and Hannah Skjellum of the SITES Lab will demonstrate equipment and methods and conduct a live podcast session.

Please join us for High Volume Image Analysis in NVivo. Kathryn Desplanque, PhD, will walk you through her research project and workflow for analyzing images in high volume using NVivo, a type of Qualitative Data Analysis software. Though traditionally used by qualitative sociologists, QDA software is equally suitable for Digital Humanities projects, and can be more intuitive and less stressful than relational database software like Filemaker or Microsoft Access.
