eSports

March 21, 2018 @ 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm

Professional Development Workshop Series

This weeks topic will be eSports presented by Matthew Belskie, Michael Good of OASIS and guest speaker Steph Loehr (@FerociouslyS), a former college esports gamer and now an advocate and streamer (https://www.polygon.com/2018/2/5/16964202/heroes-of-the-storm-voice-chat-blizzard).

What exactly are esports, and why are we talking about them in a college setting?  Games, often considered to be the bane of any successful student, are also enjoying unprecedented levels of success and popularity (particularly among college-aged people).  With more and more schools developing dedicated esports programs and even offering academic scholarships to players, now is the perfect time to learn all about them.

Perhaps most important is what college discourse might have to offer to esports, a nascent sports organization that has too frequently been in the spotlight because of toxicity and player behavior issues.

Please join us as we give you a brief introduction to esports, talk about what esports programs in higher education look like, and then explore how higher education might help to address player behavior concerns with noted LGBTQ gamer and streamer @FerociouslyS.
