Learning from Inequality in the History of Computing

April 11, 2019 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Please join us for a public lecture in the Research Hub in Davis Library.

Dr. Marie Hicks, Associate Professor in the History of Technology at Illinois Institute of Technology and award-winning author of Programmed Inequality: How Britain Discarded Women Technologists and Lost its Edge in Computing, will present how diverse actors helped build the field of computing and connect computing’s past mistakes with some of the problems we are dealing with today. From gendered labor discrimination to historical examples of early algorithmic bias, this talk shows how understanding the long history of difference and diversity in computing helps us better understand, and begin to solve, the problems we are facing today.
